Road Trip 2: Touring beautiful North Yorkshire 

Wanting a road trip that packs in moors, dales, castles, villages, towns and coastline? This road trip is just for you! The route covers 200 miles, taking you through the North York Moors, on to the coast and then back across the Vale of York into the Yorkshire Dales. Day 3 has a lot of driving, so allow 4 nights away for this trip if you can!

Day 1:
North York Moors

North York Moors

๐Ÿ“ Pick up campervan in Northallerton. Leave car with us.

๐Ÿ›ฃ Drive to Helmsley (40 min)

  • Quick stop to explore the town & grab a coffee/snack

  • Visit Helmsley Castle and / or Duncombe Park

  • Walk to Rievaulx Abbey and explore the medieval ruins

๐Ÿ›ฃ Drive to Goathland (50 min)

  • Visit Goathland Railway Station (Harry Potter fame)

  • Wander round village centre (featured in Heartbeat)

  • Walk to Mallyan Spout Waterfall

๐Ÿ• Night 1 Campsite: Abbots House Farm, Goathland

Day 2:
Yorkshire Coast

Whitby & Coast

๐Ÿ“ Drive to Whitby and park at Whitby Abbey (30 min)

  • Visit Whitby Abbey and Whitby Brewery

  • Walk down famous 199 steps

  • Explore old town and harbour

  • Enjoy tea & cake at Marie Antoinette's 

  • Visit Captain Cook Museum

  • Enjoy fish & chips at Magpie Café or Trenchers

  • Climb to the whalebone arch

  • Stroll through the historic village & coastal paths

๐Ÿ• Night 2 Campsite: Hooks House Farm, Robin Hood’s Bay

Day 3:
Yorkshire Dales

  • Walk to the famous waterfalls

๐Ÿ›ฃ Drive to Hawes (20 min)

  • Visit Wensleydale Creamery & sample cheese

  • Walk to Hardraw Force (England’s highest single-drop waterfall)

๐Ÿ›ฃ Drive the stunning Buttertubs Pass into Swaledale โ€‹

๐Ÿ• Night 3 Campsite: Usha Gap Campsite, Swaledale (scenic valley setting)

Day 4?
Relax

An extra night can be easily added to any of the days, giving you a day without tidying up and driving. 

  • Enjoy a longer walk in the area

  • Visit some of the many local pubs and breweries

  • Relax on site with a good book

Alternatively, head for one of our traditional market towns and spend the night nearby. Masham is home to the famous Theakston and Black sheep breweries, with the Old Station campsite close by.

Back home

Return to Northallerton

๐Ÿ“ Arrive by 11 AM to return the campervan

Top Tips

As with all road trips, you don't want to be driving for the whole of your break. This trip gives you plenty of time for exploring the many attractions en route, and to relax and enjoy the stunning scenery around you. At most times of year it is advisable to book sites in advance, to avoid last-minute disappointment, but this can be done while you are on the journey. Enjoy!
