Water, Nature and Dark skies
Head for Kielder Water, and its surrounding hills, nature reserves and forests. Then, when it gets dark, visit the Kielder Observatory.
Stunning Coastline
From Berwick-upon-Tweed to Seaton Sluice, the county offers more than 70 miles of stunning coastline, with the 62-mile Northumberland Coast Path allowing walkers to enjoy some of the best coastal walks in Europe. There are traditional seaside towns such as Seahouses, quaint villages like Beadnell and Warkworth, and miles of stunning beaches in between.
Mighty Castles
From powerful castles that tower over towns, to once-grand romantic ruins, Northumberland boasts more than 70 castles for visitors to explore. They are found scattered along the coast, at places like Bamburgh, perched on rugged islands like Lindisfarne, and sitting in the heart of cobbled market towns like the one in Alnwick.
Roman Ruins
Hirers driving along the B6318 will appreciate the scale and beauty of Hadrian's Wall, and enjoy plenty of opportunities to visit milecastles and forts, such as Housesteads or Vindolanda, along its length.
Historic Homes and Abbeys
As well as Roman remains, there is the Victorian splendour of the mansion at Cragside (near Rothbury), along with stately homes and abbeys scattered across this vast, beautiful county.
Top Tips
As with all road trips, you don't want to be driving for the whole of your break. This trip gives you plenty of time for exploring the many attractions en route, and to relax and enjoy the stunning scenery around you. At most times of year it is advisable to book sites in advance, to avoid last-minute disappointment, but this can be done while you are on the journey. Enjoy!
